laparoscopic gynecologic surgery

Laparoscopic gynecologic surgery is a surgical treatment technology that is gaining popularity today. The surgeon will make 3-4 incisions of 5-10 millimeters in the abdominal wall to insert a camera and surgical instruments. Finally, the uterus and tissue will be removed through the vagina or through the abdomen in cases where removal through the vagina is not possible.

At the Women's Health Center of Nakornthon Hospital, they are well-equipped with laparoscopic gynecologic surgery technology and specialized doctors who are skilled in laparoscopic hysterectomy. This makes laparoscopic hysterectomy highly safe, with small incisions, less pain, and quick recovery, allowing patients to get up and walk within 1 day after surgery.

How Is Traditional Hysterectomy Performed?

Traditional hysterectomy was different from today’s laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, where an incision is made on the abdomen either horizontally or vertically, depending on the type of condition. For example, for uterine fibroids that are not very large, a horizontal incision can be made, but if they are large enough to reach the navel area, a vertical incision may be required.

This type of surgery requires a relatively long recovery time of about 4 weeks, especially with vertical incisions, which cause more pain and are more likely to result in wound separation compared to horizontal incisions.

How Is Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery Performed?

Laparoscopic gynecologic surgery involves using small instruments through 5-10 millimeter incisions on the abdomen, typically with 3-4 incisions. The procedure includes cutting, suturing, and controlling bleeding similar to open abdominal surgery. The uterus and tissue are removed either through the vagina or through the abdomen, which may require using a tissue morcellator or enlarging one of the incisions, for example, from 1 centimeter to 3 centimeters.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy or laparoscopic gynecologic surgery is used in cases of chronic pelvic pain resulting from the following conditions:

  • Non-cancerous diseases such as uterine fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding of unknown cause, pelvic inflammatory disease, and uterine polyps.
  • Cancerous diseases such as early-stage endometrial cancer, early-stage ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia, and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) of the cervix.

Regarding self-care after laparoscopic hysterectomy (laparoscopic surgery): After surgery, keep the wound dry. Light activities can be resumed within 3-5 days after surgery. However, exercise should be delayed until one month after surgery to ensure that the body has fully recovered both internally and externally.
